Much of our work is focused on the adult learner because the Professional Learning team recognizes that all adults in the organization have an impact on our learners.  The Professional Learning Team is committed to ensuring that all students have equitable access to rigorous, high quality, and highly effective instruction regardless of race, receipt of special services, socio-economic status, English learner status and/or zip code. We recognize that our data indicate that existing system practices must be interrupted, examined and strengthened to be inclusive, relevant and responsive to the variability of learners in our classrooms and the variability evident in our colleagues.  As a department,  we commit to analyzing our practice with a critical lens, centering the humanity of learners in our work, modeling anti-racist, universally designed teaching practices in our offerings and relying on both quantitative and qualitative data to make informed decisions.

In addition to supporting divisions, departments and offices, The Department of Professional Learning also facilitates ongoing capacity building programs that support system initiatives.

Examples include:

  • Monthly professional learning conferences for Staff Development Teachers and other teacher leaders
  • Management of Leadership Development for Prospective Department Chairs
  • Organization of systemwide Leadership Information Sessions
  • Support for school-based continuing education credit offerings
  • Coaching cohort design and implementation
  • Bi-monthly professional learning opportunities for Social Emotional Learning
  • Supporting the Office of Leadership Development with the design and delivery of year-long programs for current and aspiring leaders

The Department of Professional Learning also provides non-instructional staff with a variety of professional development opportunities.  See the Business Team Professional Learning Page for more detail.
