Sessions are organized by audience.  Please scroll down to find the session that matches your assignment. There is no need to register, simply join the relevant session at the appropriate time.  The only exception to this is content areas who are requesting that teachers select choice sessions.  If this applies to you, you will receive an email from your content office. If your assigned sessions are not full day please feel free to visit the All Staff link on the Professional Study Day homepage to access optional synchronous or asynchronous sessions.

Description: Participants will learn the 5 practices to engage students in productive classroom discourse. The 5 practices include anticipating student responses, monitoring student work, selecting and sequencing student ideas, and connecting the ideas among students and mathematical concepts.

Session Title: Now That We Are in Person, How Do I Wean My Classroom Off Desmos? (Hint: You Don't!)

Description: In this session, participants will discover ways to effectively utilize Desmos activities in a class full of in-person students. Participants will learn Desmos facilitation strategies that consistently enable students to engage with the teacher, engage with the mathematics, and engage with each other. Participants should have at least minor proficiency with facilitating a Desmos activity and will leave with additional expertise in utilizing the built in features of Desmos, including Pace, Pause, Anonymize, Snapshots, and the Teacher Dashboard.

Session Title: Preparing for Illustrative Math Field Test Units

Description: During this session, we will investigate the Illustrative Mathematics Program to prepare for the field test units in Math 6, GT6, Pre-Algebra 7, Math 8, and Algebra 1 during the second semester of the 2021-2022 school year. We will focus on the shifts in planning and preparation needed for successful implementation! This session will be differentiated based on familiarity with the IM materials and platform.

Session Title: Do You Want to Build a Desmos?!

Description: Participants that join this session will embark on a journey of building a Desmos activity from scratch. If you are interested in attending this session, email Chris Wright (cwright4@bcps.org) with ideas for an activity. The presenter will utilize participation from the audience to build an activity using Desmos components in clever ways and, participant pending, some Computation Layer. The session will be recorded, so learning won't stop at the end of the session - feel free to go back and rewatch at your own pace to acquire those Desmos building skills!

Session Title: Number Talks to address Unfinished Learning and Build Metacognition

Description: We will model Number Talks as a beginning-of-class ritual that activates necessary prior knowledge, builds fluency, and improves mathematical communication. This session includes a Number Talk designed for the first lesson of the Algebra 1 curriculum, several useful visual models, and Integrates Desmos Activities.

Description: Participants will learn how to use animations to provide non-evaluative feedback to their students using the Desmos Activity Builder. A focus will be on thinking through what types of feedback will cause students to reflect on and possibly change their answers.

Session Title: Getting Started with Discovery Education Experience and Math Techbook 100 Level

Description: Participants will learn how to navigate Discovery Education Experience and Math Techbook. Throughout the session, educators will learn how to easily access Discovery Education through Schoology; navigate Discovery Education Experience, including reviewing the home page, exploring channels, and searching for content; access specific channels for math, student learning activities, SOS strategies, SEL, and ELL; and build foundation of practical and functional navigation of Math Techbook in order to build teacher competency around usage in the classroom anytime, anywhere.

Description: Great for Math 6, or any Middle School Assistance/Acceleration groups. Dust off those Cuisenaire rods and fraction strips! See models that allow your students to literally build number sense (integers, rationals, absolute value, & fraction division!)
